Directors

  • George Economou
    Chairman of the Board, President, Chief Executive Officer and Class A Director
    • Mr. George Economou was appointed to the Board of Directors in December 2010. He was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer on September 2, 2010, and Chairman and Director in December 2010. Mr. Economou has over 25 years of experience in the maritime industry. 

      He has served as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of DryShips Inc. since January 2005. He successfully took DryShips public in February 2005, on the NASDAQ Global Market under the trading symbol “DRYS”. 

      Mr. Economou has overseen the growth of DryShips into one of the largest US-listed dry bulk companies in fleet size and revenue and one of the largest Panamax owners in the world.

      Mr. Economou began his career in 1976 when he commenced working as a Superintendent Engineer in Thenamaris Ship Management in Greece.

      From 1981-1986 he held the position of General Manager of Oceania Maritime Agency in New York. Between 1986 and 1991 he invested and participated in the formation of numerous individual shipping companies and in 1991 he founded Cardiff Marine Inc., Group of Companies. 

      Mr. Economou is a member of ABS Council, INTERTANKO Hellenic Shipping Forum, and Lloyds Register Hellenic Advisory Committee. Mr. Economou is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and holds both a BSc and an MSc in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and an MSc in Shipping and Shipbuilding Management.

  • John Liveris
    Class B Director
    • Mr. John Liveris has served as a director of the Company since February 2014. He is an international consultant in the energy and technology industries. During the years 2007 to 2011, Professor Liveris served as Chairman of the Board of OceanFreight Inc., which was a shipping company listed on the NASDAQ. Prior to his current activities and until 1999, Professor Liveris was the Group Senior Advisor at Intracom, the leading Greek telecommunications and electronics manufacturer. Professor Liveris studied mechanical engineering at Tufts University in Boston, Mass. and completed his graduate and doctoral studies in engineering management at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. There he taught from 1979 to 1996, attaining Professorial rank.

  • George Kokkodis
    Class C Director
    • Since 2009, Mr. Kokkodis has been an Independent Business Introducer and Independent Client Advisor of financial investments at BNP Paribas (Suisse) SA, where he was a Senior Private Banker from 2003 to 2009 and the Head of the Greek Private Banking Desk from 1999 to 2003. From 1996 to 1998,  Mr. Kokkodis was Vice President of Private Banking at Merrill Lynch Bank Suisse S.A. and, prior to that, was Vice President of Private Banking at Bankers Trust International PLC from 1993 to 1996. Mr. Kokkodis holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the Imperial College of Science and Technology and a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Glasgow. Mr. Kokkodis is a member of the board of directors of MIG Real Estate R.E.I.C.

  • Chrysoula Kandylidis
    Class C Director
    • Mrs. Chrysoula Kandylidis was appointed to our board of directors on December 3, 2015. 

      Mrs. Kandylidis has served in the board of Directors of Dryships Inc. from 2008 until 2015. Mrs. Kandylidis has also served as an advisor to the Minister of Transport and Communications in Greece for matters concerning people with special abilities from 2004 until 2007 on a voluntary basis. 

      Mrs. Kandylidis graduated from Pierce College in Athens, Greece and from the Institut Francais d' Athenes. She also holds a degree in Economics from the University of Geneva. Mrs. Kandylidis is the sister of George Economou, our Chief Executive Officer.

  • Vassilis Karamitsanis
    Class B Director
    • Vassilis Karamitsanis was appointed to our board of directors on December 3, 2015. 

      Vassilis Karamitsanis is an attorney-at-Law and the head of BKK Karamitsanis Law Office. From 2009 to 2015 has been member of Board of Directors of Dryships Inc. From 2012 to 2014 he has been Counsel to the Greek Minister for Development. From 2007 to 2009, Karamitsanis was the head of the legal department at Karouzos Construction & Development Group. 

      Karamitsanis has also previously served as a legal advisor to Dimand Real Estate Development and LPSA Consultants S.A. and has served as a special advisor to the Hellenic Ministry of Health & Welfare. He is a member of the Athens Bar Association and practices real estate, corporate, domestic and international contracting, telecommunications, and energy law. 

      Karamitsanis graduated from Athens College Lyceum and received his law degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He also holds a postgraduate degree in Economic Analysis of Law from Erasmus University of Rotterdam and a postgraduate degree in Economic Analysis of Institutions from University Aix-Marseille III, Aix-en-Provence.

  • Anthony Kandylidis
    Executive Vice President
    • Anthony Kandylidis has served as Executive Vice President of Ocean Rig since June 2012.

      He started his career at OMI Corporation’s commercial department. During his tenure at OMI Corporation, he gained significant experience in the tanker vessel business and held various positions with responsibilities ranging in Sale and Purchase, Time Charters, FFA Trading, Corporate Finance and Strategic Planning. 

      In the spring of 2006, Mr. Kandylidis returned to Greece where he provided consultancy services to companies affiliated with Mr. George Economou.

      In September of 2006, Mr. Kandylidis founded OceanFreight Inc. and he took OceanFreight Inc. public in April of 2007.

      In 2011 OceanFreight Inc. was absorbed by Dryships through a merger. 

      Mr. Kandylidis graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown University and continued his studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he graduated with a MSc in Ocean Systems Management.

  • Gilles Bocabarteille
    Chief Operating Officer
    • Gilles Bocabarteille joined Ocean Rig in August 2012 as Senior Vice President Technical and Engineering, and he took on the position of COO from January 2013.

      He was previously Vice President, Asset Management with Ensco and earlier with Pride international (2008-2012) where he was responsible for the condition and maintenance of Ensco’s worldwide fleet. 

      After starting his career in 1991 with FORASOL as a Drilling engineer trainee, Gilles worked his way up as Country Manager, Venezuela (1994–1996), then Offshore Operations Manager (1996–1998) during which time he was responsible for all operations of the offshore business unit. 

      In 1999, he was part of the 5th generation Drillship Pride Angola construction in Korea. 

      He later took on the role of Operations Manager – Luanda, Angola (2002–2004) and was responsible for Pride Operations for TOTAL Angola, and followed that position by being named General Manager, Macaé, Brazil (2005–2008.) 

      Mr. Bocabarteille received a Mechanical Engineering degree from Arts et Metiers “ENSAM” in France in 1991.

  • Josselin Gere
    VP Marketing and Contracts
    • Josselin GERE joined Ocean Rig as Director, Marketing and Contract in June of 2012 and became Vice President Marketing and Contracts in November 2015. Prior to joining Ocean Rig, Mr. Gere served for more than 10 years in various contract and procurement positions at Total Upsteam in France, Africa and Norway. Mr. Gere started his career in finance audit with PwC in Luxembourg before moving to contract negotiation with Air Liquide in Switzerland. Mr. Gere holds a MSc in Management and Corporate Finance. 

  • Jon Hoy
    VP QHSE
    • Jon Hoy joined Ocean Rig in April 2013 as Vice President QHSE. He was previously Global Deployment & Planning Manager (HSE) with BP in London based in the UK working for BP as a member of the Upstream Operations Extended Leadership Team and Global HSE Extended Leadership Teams with overall responsibility for Global HSE Staff Deployment & Planning of approximately 1200 staff. Before that posting he had spent a year and a half as HSE Manager for all BP Angola Operations.Before that he had worked from 2000 until 2007 with ConocoPhillips UK.

      Mr. Hoy holds a BSC Eng. (Hons) Mechanical Engineering with specialism in offshore engineering from  Heriot-Watt University (1998), a  M.Sc. Safety Engineering, Reliability and Risk Management from the University of Aberdeen (2000), and an MBA  in Specialism in Leadership, University of Strathclyde Graduate School of Business (2011)

  • Niki Fotiou
    VP Finance and Accounting
    • Niki Fotiou was appointed as the Company's Vice President of Finance and Accounting in January 2015, has over 20 years of finance and accounting experience and 9 years with Dryships Inc. as SVP Accounting and Reporting and has been involved with Ocean Rig since 2008. Prior to her time with Dryships, she was employed at Deloitte and PWC. Niki is a graduate of the University of Cape Town and is a fellow of the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants and a member of the Certified Internal Auditors. From July 2006 to December 2009, Ms. Fotiou served as the Group Controller of Cardiff Marine Inc. For the period from 1993 to 2006, Ms. Fotiou worked for Deloitte and for Hyatt International Trade and Tourism Hellas. 

  • Nikiforos Sifakis
    General Counsel
    • Dr. Nikiforos Sifakis has been handling the legal and tax matters of Ocean Rig both in Greece and internationally since 2008.

      Dr. Sifakis  has taught contract law and commercial conflict of laws at the School of Law, at the University of Southampton as an appointed Lecturer in Law and has published articles in various legal journals in the United Kingdom. Dr. Sifakis specializes in matters relating to international deep-water drilling operations and related contractual, corporate and tax matters as well as matters relating to the financing of deep-water drilling units.

       Dr. Sifakis is a graduate of the School of Law, University of Southampton, U.K., LL.B. (2002), LL.M. (2003) and Ph.D. (2008). He has been a member of the Athens Bar Association since 2010.
